Katie shares her favorite things
I had been thinking about what I’d write for this month’s blog post for a few weeks, and it dawned on me today, why not write about a few of my favorite things? Health and wellness related, of course.
I started a new job in the beginning of January, and to my (pleasant) surprise, most of my teammates are also very much interested in health and wellbeing. We share our latest findings and top picks over coffee, lunch, and throughout the day. Here are a few of my faves and latest discoveries:
Quest bars: My manager introduced me to Quest protein bars. She loves them because they contain very little sugar. I love them because 1) they are loaded with protein and fiber, 2) they’re a great snack between meals, and 3) they actually taste great and have very few ingredients, which is a rarity in protein bars. Available at GNC or here on Amazon.
Wellandgood.com: Not only is Well + Good aesthetically pleasing, the website is also my go-to for the latest fitness trends, healthy detox ideas, recipes, and more. Well + Good also has an email newsletter to boot—pretty much the only e-blast I’ll actually open. Sign up here.
Turmeric tonic: A detoxifying bev from Taryn Toomey, featured here on wellandgood.com. Lemon, ginger, turmeric, cayenne, hot water. Enjoy in the morning to kick-start digestion. Lemon helps alkalize the body, turmeric acts as an anti-inflammatory and is loaded with antioxidants, and cayenne revs your metabolism for the day.
High protein smoothies: I found some (as in 34) great high-protein smoothies on greatist.com, another awesome health and wellness site. I drink them post-workout, and they keep me full until lunch. This week I tried the coffee banana smoothie and the peanut butter, banana and oat smoothie. Neither is your traditional breakfast smoothie, but I definitely give both two thumbs up!
Bone broth: Bone broth seems to be the latest health craze. Restaurants and cafes are even starting to serve the ancient tradition in coffee cups to go. Sure, chicken noodle soup has always been a go-to when you’re sick, but what’s the big deal? Bone broth is linked to shinier hair, improved digestion, and reduced joint pain and inflammation, among other benefits. The best part? It’s (surprisingly) so easy to make. Place a whole chicken or turkey carcass in a 10-quart pot, fill the pot with water so that it covers the carcass, bring to a boil, turn down the heat, and let simmer for 3-4 hours. I made chicken broth last week and used it for this yummy soup.
What are your top picks for health and wellness? Share them with the Wellness Project!
