3. Conquer Your Mountain Bike

Times Vary, Iron Range

http://www.exploreminnesota.com/travel-ideas/conquer-the-mountain-bike-trails-at-cuyuna/

Avid mountain bikers are buzzing about the state-of-the-art network of mountain bike trails at Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area at Crosby, near the Brainerd Lakes area. This 22-mile trail network winds through a landscape created by 70 years of iron ore mining. This man-made terrain consists of old mining pits and tall piles of ruddy rock excavated from the pits. Nature is working on reclaiming the area: water has filled the pits and turned them into 15 deep lakes, and trees and shrubs have taken root on the rugged landscape. As it turns out, it’s a landscape perfect for crafting a maze of trails to conquer by bike.

Get Carried by your Man – in the Wife Carry.

Saturday, July 11 – Menahga

The origin of the Wife Carry comes from a Finnish legend of Rovo-Ronkainen, who, apparently, liked to snatch women from villages and run away with them through the woods and streams of Finland and no one could catch him. Being prized for his physical prowess (if questionable morals) the great Finnish people decided to make the Wife Carry Competition as a way to demonstrate their own physical abilities to their prospective mates. One of the first winners of the competitions of old was St. Urho… More who carried his wife Seneca through hill and dale to “show the boys how it was done”. The St Urho (St Urho, patron saint of Finland) wife carry challenge will be held in Menahga MN July 11, 1pm 2015 and is the SUASA sanctioned US final. Pre-registration required, limited to 50 teams. Teams designate their local charity it will be recognized at the event and more. Other events also going on during the Menagha Midsummer celebration this day. Come for the race and stay for the parade, fireworks and more!

Ride, Sally Ride.

Sunday, July 12 – Minneapolis The Urban Assault Ride™ combines the best parts of a bike race, adventure race, obstacle course, and a back yard party. Here’s how it works: You and your teammate will set out on a city-wide quest for ‘checkpoints’ on your favorite two-wheeled steeds. At each checkpoint, you’ll drop your bikes and complete a funky/adventurous obstacle course, then remount your bikes and hit the streets for more. The goal is to complete all the checkpoints in the shortest amount of time. You choose your own… More route and checkpoint order. This means that the most clever are often the victors. Of course, it may also help if you can pull a mean big-wheel power-slide and fly across an inflatable slip-n-slide. After your pedal-powered adventure, your team will cross the finish line and enter a massive celebration of bikes and beer. The after party is just as much fun as the ride itself, thanks to the craziest raffle prize contest you’ll ever experience.
